That's very well said and was needed, thanks for the forum and reminder
Lance! I think we all learn a great deal about guitar-making here, it would be
shameful to lose that.

Well Said Lance!
We needed that well thought out reminder.
In my past profession, we had to take "Human Factors" training semi annually. One thing that was stressed in the course was that human verbal interaction is only about 10% verbal. Most of the rest is context & body language.
Since we can't use body language on a written forum, we must be extra careful when we post our thoughts so as not to be misunderstood.
With a touch of humility & respect, we can keep this the best luthiery forum on the web.
I'm sure that everyone would agree that we are privileged to have this place to freely learn & share. Let's just remember it is a privilege & not take it for granted.
Thanks again to you & all of the others (including our sponsors) whose effort makes this all possible.

Gee, I think I missed something too. I have made many good friends and contacts thanks to this forum, as well as picking up lots of info. I hope that whatever it is that happened will not prevent the "newbies" from participating. We all have great ideas/suggestions/questions that everyone can benefit from

I'm with you Lance...sometimes people's egos and pride can do a lot of damage...even in forums!

This is a great place, I love it here and hope we can all be good inspirations to each other with words of help and motivation!
Where's all this fun stuff happening?
The recent thread about the "luthier" word seemed to get a bit personal. Shouldn't have to be that way.

Well said Lance. Thanks again for playing Coach.

Also, for the seasoned builders out there providing the sage advice, I can't express my gratitude. Answering newbie questions for the 50-eleventh time is well beyond the call. Thanks

The recent thread about the "luthier" word

I guess the thread was deleted as I don't see it anywhere. Oh well...

Almost nothing gets deleted. It has either fallen off the first page or it has made it to the archive already... I am not really sure which -- but I assure you. It is there somewhere....

Lance,

Thanks. It was time, and it was well said. I would only add that the seasoned builders also show respect for newbies. Of course, 99.99% of the time intactions have shown only the greatest respect in both directions.

Pat

Michael,
No one topic is being called out, nor any one person.
I have just been feeling bad about the whole thing, the whole atmosphere, and I take it personal. Its my position to moderate this forum, and when it gets out of hand, I feel its also my fault for not stepping in sooner.
So, again, no one thing.

BTW, I LOVE Steve Martin!

Thanks Lance. Too bad we need a reminder. I would much rather police myself but sometimes a reminder is good.

I am always wary of two page threads as they ineviteably turn into personal slugfests. Never understood how it is possible to perceive a personal threat from a cathode ray tube displaying characters that we interpret as words. Or that somehow an idea needs defending to the extent of attacking someone personally. Bizarrely and uniquely human I guess.

It may or may not change as I watch our species evolve/devolve. So again thanks for the reminder and I wonder if there isn't a phrase or key word we can remember whenever we feel like bombing an idea that is different than ours or attacking a person because they see the world differently?

Maybe something like 'dratflack'?

EDIT: I'll check back in two pages.LarryH38775.8755671296

funny.... I thought that was a very good thread.

I don't know about anyone else, but I plan on ascending to a higher plane of existence.

Hey Lance, I'll bet that it is bit harder to corral 700 of us rather than 20. Regardless, your doing a good job and the occasional reminders to watch our language and attitude are good for all of us. To quote my favorite existentialist philosopher "Can't we all just get along".

Just a thought Lance..

I only see you and Don Williams as moderators. Maybe you need to assign a few more cause you can't always be here. Also, I know you don't like to but there are times when a thread just needs to be stopped period.

Running a forum is not an easy task, especially when it starts to get lots of members.

It is always ok (in my opinion) to disagree, but there are ways of doing it respectfully. Everyone has a right to express there view don't they? As long as it is done with respect. The real problem is perception. We all are doing this by typing and it is very easy to read into something that is incorrect. Personal issue will always come into play, there is no escaping it.

Here is a good example of a respectful disagreement (with out there being any thing personal). In the Glue for inlay topic, some of us mention using CA for gluing inlay and rosettes, John Hall mentions that he doesn't and states why (on spruce that is) and there is no personal feelings brought into it.

Everyone will form there own opinion. That's the way of it.

This is probably the best if not one of the best forums I frequent and I would consider it the most polite, courteous and friendly and I'm very thankful that I can be part of it.

You guys should read some of the pregnancy forums my wife reads, they are just down right nasty (my have something to do with hormones though).

Technically speaking, I'm really only the moderator of the Resonator Forum. Lance has all the rest of the responsibility. That makes me somewhat defensive of him and his position, so I apologise if I've stepped out of line on occasion and dropped the hammer on things.
If we would all weigh our thoughts in the light of "Is what I'm about to type showing disrespect to anyone as an individual or as a group?" then Lance will have an easy job moderating. Basic respect for the few rules Lance has, as well as basic respect for our fellow man will keep us as many have said "The Best" forum for builders on the web.
You all make us what we are...there are really no weak links here, unless we choose to be.
I'm proud to be associated with all of you good folks.
